Historie van de Plantagebuurt: 
Einde 19de eeuw groeide de Plantagebuurt uit tot de deftigste wijken buiten de grachtengordel. Met name de diamantwerkers die profiteerden van de diamantvondsten in Zuid-Afrika, verhuisden van de Joodse buurt naar de mooie huizen die gebouwd werden langs de Middenlaan, Muidergracht, Lepellaan en de Franse laan. Wie zich de luxe kon permitteren, verhuisde van de oude buurten in het centrum naar een mooier en ruimer huis in de Plantage. 'De Plantage' was ook een druk uitgaanscentrum, dat het Rembrandtplein stevig beconcurreerde. De 'Plantage Schouwburg' en 'Hollandse schouwburg' hadden daar een hoofdrol in, met hele succesvolle theaterstukken. Later kreeg de Hollandse schouwburg een trieste geschiedenis tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De Béta-kant van de Universiteit bevindt zich aan beide zijden van de Roetersstraat. History of the Plantage Neighbourhood: 
At the end of the 19th century, the Plantagebuurt grew into the most distinguished neighbourhoods outside the ring of canals. In particular, the diamond workers who profited from the diamond finds in South Africa moved from the Joodse Buurt to the beautiful houses built along Middenlaan, Muidergracht, Lepellaan and Franse laan.
